belstaff colonial 554 - Could this bag be better? Yes. Obviously I would like to see the buckles properly stitched on. But also the large internal pocket would benefit from a skirt with a drawstring to make sure that multiple small items cant fall out. Same for the side pockets - they only have a thick leather flap over them and small items could easily fall out. That means you either have to restrict them to large items, or put stuff in pouches. Not a biggie I suppose. I would also like to see the base and top lid, waxed. Something I could do myself with a tin of Barbour wax, but on a bag of this price, it would be nice to see it from the factory. On the whole though, this is a great bag. It is very comfortable to wear, it's very adjustable, it moulds to your body, it has a good capacity, it feels nice, it hangs well and it looks great. It's not perfect and it's definitely not technical in any way, but it's beautifully made and harkens back to a more romantic time.Chaquetas Belstaff You can keep all your ballistic nylon, molle, malice clips and wotnot. Billy Smith's endorsement aside, what with the Belstaff logo, the Union Flag, the brown leather and canvass, this bag isn't just cool, it's positively sub-zero and like a fine wine, it's just going to get better and better with age.
Many of you will recognise this now iconic shoulder bag from the film "I Am Legend" as sported by post-apocalyptic zombie-hunter, Will Smith....
There are various models in the colonial range and various colours too, but I've opted for the 554 in mountain brown - the exact model/colour Dr Robert Neville (Will Smith) uses in the film.
Some initial impressions, but first, did the film influence my purchase choice? Well, yes of course it did. This is basically a big tough shoulder bag and looks for all the world like a surplus army bag of some kind except it's much more expensive. Next I'm going to get a Belstaff jacket, an M4A1 carbine and an Alsatian called Sam - watch this space.
